How Printer Brands Squeeze Ink Out of Cartridges and Cash from Consumers

Many consumers today have one recurring complaint – why does my branded inkjet cartridge run out of ink so quickly? It might surprise you to know that the ink cartridge you bought over a decade ago is NOT the same as the ink cartridge you buy today – even if you own the same printer. The Guardian reports that “the amount of ink in the average cartridge has shrunk dramatically,” so ink cartridges today contain a fraction of the ink that they used to contain 10 years or so ago. For example, the Epson T032 colour cartridge (released in 2002) is the same size as the Epson colour T089 (released in 2008). But the T032 contains 16ml of ink and the T089 contains just 3.5ml of ink. It’s a similar story with Hewlett Packard (HP) cartridges. A decade ago, the best-selling HP cartridge had 42ml of ink and sold for about £20. Today, the standard printer cartridges made by HP may contain as little as 5ml of ink but sell for about £13. If you slice open a HP ink cartridge, it’s shocking what you see. The sponge sizes have become increasingly smaller, with a lot of empty wasted space. [...]

Getting Familiar with the Print Head

If there’s one part of your printer that you should get familiar with, it’s the print head. Cleaning your print head is necessary to ensure it does not get clogged and has the maintenance it needs to give you great prints each and every time. So what is the print head? Apart from being one of the most costly components of your printer, the print head essentially consists of a nozzle that holds the ink tank, a resistor that control ink flow, the case that ensures all the ink cartridges fit correctly and the plate through which ink flows to print on the paper. How does a print head work? When you hit the print button, ink flows into the print head. If you notice closely, your ink cartridges have an array of copper circuits. These allow the print head resistor to heat the ink. As this is done the ink expands and is pushed through the nozzle plate onto the paper. Note that only minuscule droplets of ink are released, and this is done several times until the complete page is printed. Why should you clean the print head? It is important to clean the print head on a [...]
